How often do you share blog posts? I’ve been working the social media channels hard the past few weeks and am becoming increasingly frustrated. As many of you know, I’m working on the AMMA miningoilandgasjobs.com project full-time. The focus of my online reading has been around the resources industry, career advice and recruitment. Posted by Sarah Mitchell on 8 September 2011 | 14 Comments

Have you spotted arrogant bloggers? It’s taken me a long while to admit to being a blogger. If you read my first post, you’ll see how uncomfortable I was with the idea of keeping a blog. I worried about saying anything relevant. What I didn’t share was my worry about establishing a vanity vehicle for my own opinion. It struck me as an arrogant thing to do. I see a lot of arrogance amongst bloggers and it drives me nuts.

12 Ways You Can Help a Blogger Out

Posted by Sarah Mitchell on 16 June 2011 | 3 Comments

You probably already know I’m a big fan of blogging. Next to public speaking, my blog is the most effective marketing activity I undertake. I remind myself of this when faced with a blank page or a busy week and I still haven’t posted anything. A recent report published by Hubspot reinforced my high opinion of the blog. Their research reported in the Marketing Data Box reveals marketers believe the blog is great value with more than half the companies surveyed reporting the blog is “below average cost” for generating leads. Blogging trumps social media, SEO and PPC (pay per click) in the cost game.

Have you noticed an increase in SPAM comments on your blog? In the past few months, I’ve been hit hard. I’ve also noticed the people doing it have a few new tricks. Historically, I used to get comments full of links and text with no relation to my post topic or even to my blog - obvious SPAM. It’s becoming a lot harder to spot the dodgy comments but they do have common features.

When was the last time you had an assignment? One of the great benefits of content marketing is getting published without having to go through a query process. Do you ever struggle to come up with ideas for a blog post? If you’re like me, you probably suffer from ebbs and flows in inspiration and motivation. Even when I have a good idea, I don’t always have enough writing mojo left at the end of the day to translate it into great copy. On other days I can put 500 or more words on the page before I realise I haven’t really said anything, or anything that hasn’t already been said about a million times. It’s not writer’s block; it’s more like blogging fatigue.

My Favourite Blogs

While it’s not exactly brown paper packages tied up in string, I do want to share some of my favourite blogs. I’ll forgo the “Best of 2010” and “Predictions for 2011” posts in lieu of what I consider to be the best content around. Some of them are well known, some only have small followings. In all cases, these are my “go to” places for inspiration, information and advice.

How do you feel about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)? Do you hate it? I have to confess to sharing the same opinion expressed by Jason Amunwa in his post at The Zest titled, Why I hate SEO – but also respect it. If you’re interested in Asset Based Marketing, it’s a necessary evil.
